Date is circa. During World War II Vanport was the largest public housing project in the country, and the only one with its own library, located two blocks from the city center. It was considered an important educational resource because Vanport lacked its own high school, instead relying on the Portland Public School system. During the library's first week more than 800 library cards were requested.
