Riverfest September 07 notes from Amy
Hello all,
I thought yesterday’s meeting made some much needed progress in getting this Riverfest idea moving forward. Below is my attempt at notes, please let me know if anything is missing.
Riverfest Meeting
9/10/07
Attendees – Bill Young, Amy Morrison, Daniel Etra, Jeff Henderson, Rick Bastasch, Alan Horton, Bob Gandolfi, Mike Houck, Wisteria Loeffler
Introductions were made, new attendees introduced themselves. Mike is from the Urban Greenspaces Institute & Audubon, his interest is seeing Ross Island and Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refugee included in the event somehow. Wisteria has experience as an event planner and is interested in working with the group.
Items discussed
1. Ideal date has been changed to the weekend after Labor Day – September 6th & 7th.
a. In order to confirm Rick will talk with Kip at Portland Parks to see park availability.
b. Other events mentioned on that weekend (or close to it) that should be contacted about next year and perhaps asked to be involved in someway. (this wasn’t designated to anyone – would be wait for the phase 1 organizer to do this?)
i. Pints to Pasta
ii. Dragonsports – dragonboat races
iii. Muddy Boots
iv. TBA
v. Surfrider Paddle Out
vi. Sea Port Festival
2. Confirmed Oregon Trout as a fiscal sponsor
a. Allan will draft a contract to outline fiscal sponsor process and circulate to the committee?
3. General discussion about hiring an event coordinator led to the following issues and decisions
a. We still need a hook (ideas are a river parade, barge music, theme about the future, music release party (Bob mentioned the Port & KINK)
b. We still need a clear vision & event activities
c. We should hire someone for the first phase to help with these and other questions (i.e. budget, defining committee roles, defining event activities, timeline, event plan, facilitated discussion with partners).
i. Daniel will draft a RFP and send to committee (Bastasch, Rick [Rick.Bastasch@ci.portland.or.us]; alan@ortrout.org; amy@willamette-riverkeeper.org; dan@salmonsafe.org; detra@ecotrust.org; jeff@onemillionrevolutions.org; kwadden@ci.portland.or.us; mmontgomery@ci.portland.or.us; rick.bastasch@ci.portland.or.us; weyoung2@qwest.net)
ii. Comments to Jeff due this Friday.
That’s all I’ve got. Since I mentioned it at the meeting I also attached an invitation to the Portland Boathouse Open House. There will be a river parade….likely on a smaller scale.
Maybe we should have talked about next meeting dates or times that work for the group in October for the larger facilitated discussion. Just a thought?
