Riverfest Issues and Opportunities rab October 07
Weaving already-existing, late summer events into Riverfest (Oregon Symphony Waterfront Concert, Triathlon, Dragonboat Races,…)
Balancing size and complexity against having a guaranteed success—things that make Riverfest exciting also increase risks of failure:
• multiple venues
• sustainability
• embracing other big events
Must haves:
• ways to get out on the River (charters, rentals, freebies)
• music and/or art
• food (river cuisine? salmon, lamprey, sturgeon?)
• river information:
- natural history
- how to get involved
- city processes and projects
What’s our rainy day alternative?
Is there any news that could be tied to event? (speculative examples follow)
- Ross Island management plan released?
- some big grant for a river project?
Ideas and Questions:
- get this into school coursework so we can have a poster from each school (or just lots of posters from kids)
- what do we want in terms of ceremony (opening activity, benediction, etc.)
- do we or how do we involve communities of faith?
Who to Involve:
Tribes
PDC-to plug its riverfront redevelopment efforts and connect with development community (Ankeny-Burnside, Burnside Bridgehead, South Waterfront)
