ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Zenger Urban Agricultural Park, Friends of Zenger Farm, Portland, Oregon 2003-2006
• Executed $800,000 capital campaign and construction management of full-scale sustainable remodel of historic farmhouse and homestead in SE Portland to create permanent education center for youth, families and farmers. Simultaneously developed and expanded experiential education programs in sustainable agriculture, greenbuilding demonstration, community food security and local economic development. Secured funding, resources and partnerships from private, public, corporate and community sources.
Salmon Nation Citizen Movement, Ecotrust, Portland, Oregon 2003 & 2006
• Designed and launched multiple-objective citizen movement toward better living and stewardship to revive, Salmon Nation, a centuries old name for the lands and waters from Alaska to California where wild salmon thrive. Conceptualized and managed all aspects of 2003 campaign: Fireside Chat – Stories from Salmon Nation, Salmon Nation Block Party and Ecotrust’s participation in the 20th Annual Metro Salmon Festival. Concepted and managed creative elements for 2006 SN Block Party including mainstage, conference center, outdoor workshops and street performers. Events focus on bridging urban and rural communities in celebration of Pacific Northwest culture.
Lents International Farmers Market – Friends of Zenger Farm, Portland, Oregon Fall 2004-present
• Leveraged public, private and community resources to implement and fund the Lents International Farmers Market. Collaborated with Portland/Multnomah Food Policy Council to design neighborhood community food assessment tool, information gathering process and programmatic response as city-wide model. Assisted community members in formation of the Lents Food Group. Hosted pilot market in Summer 2006. Leveraged $50,000 nationwide pilot grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to secure $150,000 for a full-scale market through the Northwest Health Foundation.
Master’s Thesis in Ethnobotany, University of Hawai’i, Honolulu, Hawai’i 1997
• Received grant from the Native Hawaiian Culture and Arts Program to complete research on the ethnobotany and population biology of olona, an endemic Hawaiian plant in the Nettle family. Forged working relationships with native Hawaiian artisans and craft-people. Acted as a liason between the university and native Hawaiian artisans to communicate the importance of population genetics research. Produced, filmed, edited and distributed video documenting modern techniques for processing raw plant material into cordage for fishing nets and lines.
