Executive Summery

 

 

This was a survey conducted on fourth and fifth grade children at Arleta Elementary School. The survey was designed for two reasons. The first reason was to gain insight into perceptions of how children view their relationships with adults. The second reason the survey was given was to inquire about how children perceive businesses in their neighborhood.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Survey Findings

 

The survey consisted eighty-six children and asked various questions. The fourth grade class consisted of 56 children and the fifth grade class consisted of 30 children.

The first question asked the children how many grown ups do you know other than your family members who are an important part of your life? The result was a variety of different numbers. The majority of both 4th and 5th graders felt that between 2 and 8 grown ups plays an important role in their life. The number one response of 4th graders was 4 grown ups played an important role in their lives. The number one response from 5th graders was divided between two and eight grown ups play an important role in their lives. The resulting graph below shows the correlation between the question of how many grown ups do you know other than your family members who are an important part of your life (x-axis) and how many children responded to each different number (y-axis). Note: 99 indicates a missing response.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The second question asked how many grown ups read to you at least once a week? The resulting information for the fourth grade class was that 46.4% said that no grown ups read to them at least once a week, 19.6% said that one grown up reads to them at least once a week, 8.9% said that two grown ups read to them at least once a week, 7.1% said that three grown ups read to them at least once a week, and 17.9% responded that more than three grown ups read to them once a week. The resulting information for the 5th grade class was that 50% said that no grown ups read to them once a week, 20% said that one grown up reads to them at least once a week, 20% said that two grown ups read to them at least once a week, and 10% responded that at more than three grown ups read to them at least once a week. The graph below shows correlation between the response chosen to the question “How many grown ups read to you at least once a week?” (X-axis) and how many children responded to the question. Note value 4 indicates more than three grown ups read to them once a week.

The third question asked how many grown ups listen to you talk about things that are on your mind? The resulting information for the fourth grade class was that 19.6% said that no grown ups listen to them talk about things that are on their mind, another 19.6% said that at least one grown up listens to them talk about things that are on their mind, 16.1% said that two grown ups listens to them talk about things that are on their mind, 8.9% said that three grown ups listens to them talk about things that are on their mind, and 35.7% said that more than three grown ups listens to them talk about things that are on their mind. The fifth grade class responded with 10% that said that no grown ups listen to them talk about things that are on their mind, 23.3% said that one grown up listens to them talk about things that are on their mind, 6.7% said that two grown ups listen to them talk about things that are on their mind, 3.3% said that three grown ups listen to them talk about things that are on their mind, and by far the majority of fifth graders responded with 56.7% saying that more than three grown ups listen to them talk about things that are on their mind.

The fourth question asked was how many grown ups talk to you without making you feel stupid? The resulting information for the fourth grade class was that, 21.4% said that no grown ups talk to them without making them feel stupid, 10.7% said that one grown up talks to them without making them feel stupid, 21.4% said that two grown ups talk to them without making them feel stupid, 5.4% said that three grown ups talk to them without making them feel stupid, and the majority with 39.3% felt that more than three grown ups talk to them without making them feel stupid. The fifth grade class responded with 23.3% saying that no grown ups talk to them without making them feel stupid, 20% said that one grown up talks to them without making them feel stupid, 16.7% said that two grown ups talk to them without making them feel stupid, 6.7% said that three grown ups talk to them without making them feel stupid, and the majority with 33.3% responded felt that more than three grown ups talk to them without making them feel stupid.

The fifth question asked was how many grown ups help you with things you’re stuck with? The resulting information from the fourth grade class was 3.6% said that grown ups don’t help them when they get stuck, 12.5% said that they can rely on one grown up when they get stuck, 25% said that they can count on two adults to go to when they get stuck, 26.8% said that they could go to three grown ups when they get stuck, and the majority with 32.1% said that they had 4 or more adults that they could go to when they get stuck. The fifth grade class responded with 3.3% that said that grown ups don’t help them when they get stuck, 13.3% said that one grown up helps them when they get stuck, 10% said that they could go to two grown ups for help when they get stuck, 23.3% said that they could go to 3 different adults when they get stuck, and 50% said that they had 4 or more adults to go to when they get stuck.

The sixth question asked how many grown ups help you learn things you want to learn about? Of the fourth grade class that was surveyed 7.1% said that no grown ups help them learn about things they want to learn about, 14.3% said that they had one adult that helped them learn things that they wanted to learn about, 23.2% said that they had two adults that helped them learn things that they wanted to learn about, 21.4% said that they had three adults that helped them learn things that they wanted to learn about, and 33.9% said that they had four or more adults that helped them learn about things they wanted to learn about. The fifth grade class responded with 3.3% said that no grown ups help them learn about things they want to learn about, 20% said that they had one adult that helped them learn things that they wanted to learn about, 10% said that they had two adults that helped them learn things that they wanted to learn about, 26.7% said that they had three adults that helped them learn about things that they wanted to learn about, and the majority of the fifth graders surveyed with 40% said that they had four or more adults that helped them learn things that they wanted to learn about.

The seventh question asked how many grown ups make you feel safe? Of the fourth grade class that was surveyed no-one answered that no grown ups make them feel safe, 10.7% said that one grown up made them feel safe, 14.3% said that two grown ups made them feel safe, 14.3% said that three grown ups made them feel safe, but the majority of the students 60.7% said that more than three grown ups make them feel safe. The fifth grade class responded with 3.3% saying that no grown ups made them feel safe, 10% said that one grown up made them feel safe, 16.7% said that two grown ups made them feel safe, 3.3% said that three grown ups made them feel safe, and the majority of fifth graders 66.7% felt that three or more grown ups made them feel safe.

 

 

 

The eighth question asked how many grown ups answer your questions regularly? Of the fourth grade class that was surveyed 5.4% said that no adults answer their questions regularly, 17.9% said that one adult answers their questions regularly, 26.8% said that two adults answer their questions regularly, 12.5% said that three adults answer their questions regularly, and 37.5% said that more than three adults answer their questions regularly. The fifth grade class responded with 6.7% saying that no grown ups answer their questions regularly, 10% said that one adult answers their questions regularly, 16.7% said that two adults answer their questions regularly, 16.7% said that three adults answer their questions regularly, and the majority 50% said that more than three adults answer their questions regularly.

The ninth question asked how many grown ups talk to you about how you’re doing in school? Of the fourth grade class that was surveyed 1.7% said that no adults ask them how they are doing in school, 14.3% said that one adult asks about how they are doing in school, 21.4% said that two adults asks about how they are doing in school, 14.3% said that three adults asks about how they are doing in school, and 48.2% said that more than three adults ask about how they are doing in school. The fifth grade class responded with 20% saying that no adults ask them about how they are doing in school, 0% said that one adult asks about how they are doing in school, 16.7% said that two adults ask about how they are doing in school, and 13.3% said that three adults ask about how they are doing in school, and the majority 50% said that more than three adults ask about how they are doing in school.

 

 

 

The tenth question asked how many grown ups ask you about your day? Of the fourth grade class surveyed 14.3% said that no grown ups ask about how their day went, 12.5% said that one grown up asks them how their day went, 33.9% said that two grown ups ask them how their day went, 14.3% said that three grown ups ask them how their day went, and 25% said that more than three grown ups ask them how their day went. The fifth grade class responded with 13.3% saying that no grown ups ask them how their day went, 13.3% said that one grown up asks them how their day went, 13.3% said that two grown ups ask them how their day went, 16.7% said that three grown ups ask them how their day went, and 36.7% said that more than three grown ups ask them how their day went. Two of the fifth graders did not respond to this question.

The eleventh question asked how often do grown-ups smile at you? Of the fourth grade class surveyed 30.4% said that adults smile at them all the time, 32.1% said that adults smiles at them most of the time, 30.4% said that adults smile at them some of the time, and 5.4% said that adults smile at them none of the time. The fifth grade class responded with 30% saying that adults smile at them all the time, 50% said that adults smile
