Portland residents have the opportunity to visit with neighbors and learn how to save money and resources at the Neighborhood Fix-it Fair taking place at Whitaker Middle School on Saturday, November 21 from 9 am to 2 pm. Representatives from Metro, city government, and local nonprofit organizations will answer questions and teach residents simple, effective ways to fix up their homes and reduce bills.

The fun-filled Fair features 25 exhibits and a number of classes. The 45-minute classes address a wide array of topics, including:

▪  home weatherization

▪  water conservation

▪  insulation and furnace basics

▪  home repair

▪  crime and fire prevention

pesticide-free gardening

▪  home health hazards

▪  tree pruning

▪  house financing

▪  bike maintenance & repair

Attendees at the Weatherization Workshop will learn simple, effective ways to stay warm and lower utility bills. The first 150 people to attend this class will receive a free kit including plastic storm windows and weatherstripping (materials limited to Portland residents), and qualifying low-income Portland residents can sign up for free insulation services. At the Water Conservation Workshop, attendees will learn how to save up to $80 per year on their water and sewer bills

through simple repair of leaky faucets and toilets. Free water-saving materials worth $25 will be distributed.

In the exhibit area of the Fair, attendees can talk with experts about topics such as composting, home security, car sharing, low interest home repair loans, residential tax credits, downspout disconnection, and recycling.

“Having all these resources in one place is a terrific opportunity for Portland residents. The Fair is a great way to learn how to solve household problems, lower heating costs and, if households are eligible, apply for free insulation through the Block by Block program.” Dave Tooze, Portland Energy Office.

Free child care will be provided for those attending the Fair.

For a complete schedule of classes or other Fix-It Fair information, contact the City of Portland Energy Office at 823-7222.
