November 2, 1998
Dear Workshop Leader,
Thank you for participating as a Workshop Leader at the November 21st Fix-it Fair. This year’s Fair will feature an expanded list of workshop topics supported by high quality exhibits. We expect a larger than average attendance as we have doubled our advertising. (We’ll be direct mailing invitations to 11,000 homes in Sumner, Cully, Concordia and parts of other Central Northeast neighborhoods.) We at the Portland Energy Office look forward to working with you and hope the following information will help you in preparing for the event.
Location: Whitaker Middle School, 5700 NE 39th, just north of Killingsworth.
Arrive early to get your classroom ready. Bring your own supplies, audio-visual equipment, etc.
Schedule: Enclosed is the Workshop Schedule with corresponding room number assignments. Please check-in at the Energy Office Greeting table when you first arrive. We will direct you to your classroom.
All workshops (except Water Conservation) are scheduled on a one hour cycle, beginning at the top of the hour and ending 45 minutes later. PLEASE STAY ON SCHEDULE! Structure your presentations, including Q&A to end no later than 15 minutes prior to the top of the hour. You must allow enough time for the classroom to empty out and then fill up with new participants!
Annoying interruptions were a frequent comment from last year’s surveys. We will have “class full -- do not disturb” or similar signs for instructors to use at your discretion. Also, plan on having the next class arrivals anxiously waiting in the hall way.
If another workshop is scheduled to follow your class, please quickly take-down and exit so the next instructor can set-up before the top of the hour. Carry on after class conversations in the outer hall.
Weather: In case of inclement weather (snow or ice), please call the Energy Office at 823-7222. We will record a message with specific instructions about whether we are open or canceled.
Door Prize: BBB and the Green Neighborhood Network are giving away a premium front loading washing machine after the second Fair on January 23rd. We request that City employees, workshop leaders and their families refrain from entry since the door prize is designed for citizen participants.

Publicity: We are enclosing promotional materials for the Fair. Please use them freely to get the word out. You may reproduce them, or if you’d like additional copies, call us.
Announce Free Weatherization: If appropriate in your presentation, remind your audience that the Block-By-Block Weatherization Program offers FREE weatherization for lower income houses. Refer them to our exhibit in the Cafeteria.
Thank you for participating in this Fix-it fair. We are looking forward to working with you to create a fun, informative and well-attended community event. Call Jessica Yang at 823-7787 if you have questions, and see you there!
Sincerely,
Jessica Yang, Dave Tooze and Elizabeth Johnson-Kuhn
