TIMELINE OF 2001 BROCHURE UPDATE:
Start with assumption that we want to keep general look/set-up of brochure (tri-fold, 3 groupings of Benchmarks – thriving region, fulfilling lives, & safe and caring communities).
Took 1999 brochure and made “easy” changes (i.e., different staff/Board members).
Decided to highlight 9 Benchmarks instead of 8 (and move url, etc., to other positions on brochure).
Updated existing graphs that may make it to final product (i.e., NOT salmon count, and swap Air Pollution index with CO2 emissions to demonstrate new measurement by Office of Sustainable Development).
To get idea of what Benchmarks to include, we started updating every Benchmark number that was easily accessed to see if other ones should be replaced (to highlight a trend or issue).
We also looked at changing some Benchmarks (per capita inc & teen preg).
Created a spreadsheet placing every Benchmark into the 3 groupings highlighting which ones looked most promising as a representative of each group.
Created graphs and placed on wall to walk-through/argue/discuss which should go into brochure. Also, put actual Benchmark, or supporting data in brochure?
Updated text around those nine. Did same wall spread to edit narratives. Decided to include Benchmark “teasers” as an incentive to visit web site.
During whole process, kept in contact with data experts as to possible trends, explanations, suggestions, etc.
Put together draft to send out for Board comments.
Integrated comments, making minor changes and then changed one whole Benchmark at late suggestion of Office of Sustainable Development -- connects in with recently adopted Local Action Plan on Global Warming, which can be found on their web site:
