ORDINANCE No. 181819

 

Provide grant to Sweatfree Communities, Inc. to support formation of the State and Local Government Sweatfree Consortium (Ordinance)

 

The City of Portland ordains:

 

Section 1.  The Council finds:

1.  By Resolution adopted on August 29, 2007, the City expressed its desire to create and implement a more detailed Sweat Free Procurement Policy for uniforms and clothing purchases.

2.  One aspect of the Sweatfree policy includes supporting the creation of the State and Local Government Sweatfree Consortium.

3.  The proposed State and Local Government Sweatfree Consortium will investigate and address working conditions of uniform and clothing suppliers’ factories through education and by leveraging buying power on behalf of government entities affiliated with the Consortium.

4.  The proposed State and Local Government Sweatfree Consortium also will collaborate with other public agencies to share information and cost of monitoring suppliers and factory locations.

5.  Funds were allocated for this grant through the 2007 Fall BuMP.

NOW, THEREFORE, the Council directs:

 

a.  The Commissioner of Public Utilities is authorized to execute a grant agreement to support the formation of the State and Local Government Sweatfree Consortium, subject to approval as to form by the City Attorney’s office.

b.  The Mayor and the Auditor are authorized to draw and deliver checks in the amount of $20,000 made payable to Sweatfree Communities, Inc., once the grant agreement is executed.
