RESOLUTION No. 36412

 

Recognition of LIVESTRONG Day, a celebration of cancer survivorship and the need to raise awareness about cancer survivorship issues (Resolution)

 

WHEREAS, current statistics report that over 10 million individuals are living with, through, or beyond cancer in the United States alone; and

 

WHEREAS, it is estimated that in 2006, 1.4 million people will be newly diagnosed with cancer, and approximately 18,300 of them will be living in the State of Oregon; and

 

WHEREAS, lifetime cancer prevalence reports that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will be diagnosed with a form of cancer in our lifetime and three in four families will care for a family member with cancer, and therefore cancer will impact everyone either as a patient, a family member or a friend; and

 

WHEREAS, survivorship begins from the moment of diagnosis, with 64% of adult survivors living 5 years or more post treatment; and

 

WHEREAS, cancer survivors face multiple issues including fear of recurrence, medical complications, insurance difficulty, economic struggles, employment concerns, symptom management trouble, lack of social support and understanding, exercise and nutrition confusion, and many others that emerge as people continue to defeat or live longer with cancer due to improved medical technology, early detection, and greater advocacy; and

 

WHEREAS, the Lance Armstrong Foundation (hereafter referred to as LAF), in connection with its local community partners, works diligently to celebrate survivors and support survivorship issues by raising awareness, advocating, and financially supporting survivorship programs; and

 

WHEREAS, the LAF believes that in the battle with cancer, unity is strength, knowledge is power, and attitude is everything;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Portland City Council supports the recognition of May 17, 2006 as LIVESTRONG day; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Portland City Council honors and supports cancer survivors and promoting awareness of cancer survivorship issues.
