City Council Agenda Item
Mayor’s Briefing Paper
Date submitted to Mayor: January 13, 2005
Date to be heard by Council: February 2, 2005
Bureau contact and phone: Barbara Aguon 823-5478
Please describe the ordinance (history, background, any other pertinent information):
In 2002, Red Tail Golf Course purchased a Belgian Tervuren dog from the Oregon Humane Society to herd away the numerous geese that are found in the playable portions of this golf course, as well as the occasional predator. She has done her job faithfully and well, without incident. However, recently, a citizen was frightened when Shasta was trying to herd his dog off the golf course property. Mark Vendshus, a Parks employee and Shasta’s current handler, is willing to provide a home for her until and unless a permanent home is found through a regional Tervuren dog rescue program.
Is this a routine Council item? Yes X No (Please explain below)
This is the first time that Parks has had to retire a service animal. However, since we do plan to replace Shasta and have another similarly trained dogs at Heron Lakes, we expect this might be an occasionally necessary, but routine, type of ordinance.
