RESOLUTION No. 36283
Promote racial justice and denounce acts of hate in the City of Portland (Resolution).
WHEREAS; the Constitution and the law of the United States protect the freedoms of all regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin, and
WHEREAS; the City of Portland prides itself as a place that encourages diversity; and
WHEREAS; the City of Portland is dedicated to ensuring that all members of the community regardless, of race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, and national origin have equal access to all public places free from harassment or intimidation; and
WHEREAS; the City of Portland condemns crimes based on race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, and national origin and is dedicated to prosecution of these crimes to the full extent of the law; and
WHEREAS; acts of hate erode the moral fabric and stability of our communities; and
WHEREAS; many communities, whether rural, urban, or suburban, have adopted proclamations and resolutions denouncing acts of hate across the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Portland City Council hereby denounces acts of hate and calls upon each citizen to extend their hands in friendship, trust and understanding; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Portland urges all people to join us in strongly resisting any acts of hate or intolerance against any individual or group within our community, and calls upon the citizens of the City of Portland to actively report incidents motivated by hate.
