SUBJECT:  Establish a New Nonrepresented Classification - Public Works Inspection Manager

The attached Ordinance creates a new classification of Public Works Inspection Manager, in order to classify a position in the Bureau of Environmental Services (BES). This classification is necessary in order to appropriately classify and compensate the position.

Background

This classification is being established to classify a position in BES which is responsible for managing the public works inspection section of BES, developing and implementing bureauwide construction inspection policies and procedures; and developing construction specifications, standards and site safety procedures.

The classification is being established with an effective date that is the date the Classification Request was submitted to the Bureau of Human Resources.

The position to be reclassified to this new classifications is already authorized in the FY2004-05 Budget for BES. The position is currently allocated to a classification one range lower than the new classification. The cost of allocating the position to the new classification will be approximately 5% above the budgeted amount, and will be absorbed in the bureau’s current budget.

Recommendation

I recommend that the Mayor and City Council approve the creation of this new classification.
