RESOLUTION NO. 36139

Recognize Chinese American heroes and the invaluable role of Portland native, Hazel Ying Lee, in the Second World War.

Whereas,  Chinese Americans have actively participated in the defense of our nation since the Civil War, including more than 20 thousand who served in World War II; and

Whereas, the honorable and valiant military contribution of Chinese Americans have been largely unrecognized by the general public; and

Whereas,  filmmakers Montgomery Hom and Alan Rosenberg have significantly raised public awareness through documentaries that chronicle the Chinese American experience in World War II; and

Whereas,  Mr. Hom and Mr. Rosenberg have produced a documentary entitled “A Brief Flight,” the inspiring story of Hazel Ying Lee, a Portland native and the first Chinese American woman to fly for the US Military; and

Whereas  the film “A Brief Flight” teaches us that Hazel Ying Lee was a woman of courage and dedication- qualities shared by the many Chinese American troops who have served our country with distinction; and

Whereas,  the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) will air “A Brief Flight” May 25, 2003 to the viewers of Oregon; and
