SUBJECT:  Establish a New Classification of Electrician/Instrument Technician

The attached Ordinance creates a new represented classification of Electrician/Instrument Technician and establishes an interim compensation rate for this class. This classification is necessary in order to appropriately classify and compensate positions which may be assigned responsibility for performing the work of both an electrician and instrument technician.

Background

This new classification is being established so that the Bureau of Environmental Services can assign both electrician and instrument technician work to one position. Right now BES has to send both an Electrician and Instrument Technician to jobs that involve the repair, maintenance or modification of electrical power and control systems. With this classification they will be able to send out one employee instead of two to complete this work.

The proposed salary range for this new classification is 3% above the Electrician and Instrument Technician classifications. This reflects the additional knowledge, experience and certification required to perform the combined duties. The increased cost in salary and benefits will be absorbed within the bureau’s current budget allocation.

Recommendation

I recommend that the Mayor and City Council approve the creation of this new classification.
