SUBJECT:  Establish a New Classification of Water Service Inspector II

The attached Ordinance creates a new classification, Water Service Inspector II, in order to reclassify an authorized position in the Bureau of Water Works. This classification is necessary in order to appropriately classify and compensate a position that will oversee and assist other Water Service Inspectors and inspect water services provided to City customers.

Background

This new classification is being established to reclassify a position in the Bureau of Water Works. Due to the size of the Meter Inspection unit and the variety of duties performed, it is in need of a lead position. The Water Service Inspector II position will fill that role. It will plan, schedule and coordinate the daily work of Water Service Inspectors, provide advice and assistance in the field, and perform the work of a Water Service Inspector.

The proposed salary range is 8% above the Water Service Inspector I. This reflects the additional work and aligns the new classification appropriately with other Water Bureau and City classifications. The increased cost in salary and benefits will be absorbed within the bureau’s current budget allocation.

Recommendation

I recommend that the Mayor and City Council approve the creation of this new classification.
