Mayor Wheeler and City Commissioners
Thank you for carefully reviewing this project. I urge you to RECONSIDER approval until further greenway improvements are implemented.
We have lived in South Portland for over a decade. We relish our close proximity to the Willamette River and easy access to the greenway trail. We have been eagerly looking forward to its completion in South Waterfront. The trail is not only important to residents of Portland, but also to friends and tourists that visit. We rode rented bikes on the trail when visiting Portland years before we thought about moving here. The trail stayed in our memories.
That said, the sheer size and crowding of the proposed greenway plan in front of buildings 41 and 44 seems out of character with the district's wider and more vegetated greenway. I feel there needs to be a larger greenway setback, more space between the buildings and the trail. Greater building setbacksgive a better pedestrian scale. And there needs to be bonus areas that are clearly for public use. It is my understanding that the developers are receiving maximum bonuses and thus should follow the spirit and design of the rest of the trail.
The greenway is a popular regional recreation and transportation corridor and usage will only increase as this critical gap in the trail system is built. It is also one of the last parcels of land long the urban Willamette waterfront to be developed. It needs to be the best possible. The current design is not the best.
Thank you for your reconsideration.
