Whereas, every year tens of thousands of American workers are killed by workplace injuries and occupational disease; and

Whereas, tens of thousands more are permanently disabled, and millions are injured; and

Whereas, concerned Americans are determined to prevent these tragedies by organizing Workers Memorial Day on April 28, a day chosen by the unions of the AFL-CIO as a day to remember victims of workplace injuries and disease; and

Whereas, on this day we renew our efforts to seek stronger safety and health protections, better standards and enforcement, and fair and just compensation; and

Whereas, we rededicate ourselves to improving safety and health in every American workplace;

Now, therefore, I, Tom Potter, Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the “City of Roses,” do hereby proclaim April 28, 2008 to be

Workers Memorial Day

in Portland, in recognition of workers killed, injured and disabled on the job.
