Whereas, the security and freedoms we enjoy in this city and country have been assured because some

have, and do, endure hardship and danger on behalf of us all; and

Whereas, military members who have been deployed, who are about to be deployed, and who make

themselves available for deployment do exemplify honor and duty in keeping us safe and free; and

Whereas, our military members who have volunteered to deploy do serve in areas of conflict, fight forest

fires, protect our people during times of natural and man-made disasters;

Whereas, the families of those who have served and currently serve in this country’s military, do

experience loneliness, increased responsibilities, anxiety, and sometimes grief of loss; and

Whereas, wounded military members and veterans returning home do honor us with their selfless

sacrifices and determination; and

Whereas, those who support our military members, and their families, by providing financial assistance,

counseling, and everyday courtesies such as an oil change, a mowed lawn or cleaning the gutters, help to ease their burdens; and

Now, therefore, I, Tom Potter, Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the “City of Roses,” do hereby proclaim Veterans’ Day 2008 to be a

Day of Appreciation and Gratitude to our

Veterans and those currently serving in the United States Military

and encourage all residents to observe this day.
