Whereas, Portland is a city that treasures volunteers and community organizations as a foundation of a strong

community; and

Whereas, United Way of the Columbia-Willamette believes that advancing the common good is about changing

systems to help all of us; and

Whereas, United Way of the Columbia-Willamette believes that we are all connected and interdependent. We all

win when a child succeeds in school, when families are financially stable, when people are healthy; and

Whereas, United Way of the Columbia-Willamette depends on people with community spirit to support the

work and solutions to address pressing issues of our families and citizens most in need; and

Whereas, United Way of the Columbia-Willamette wishes to recognize the volunteers who contribute their time,

passion and expertise to address these community needs; and

Whereas, community volunteers and contributors such as Marta and Ken Thrasher demonstrate the

commitment, time and assets necessary to support these community needs; and

Whereas, Community Based Organizations, Foundations and Non-Profits such as the Rose Society and the

Alexis de Toqueville Society help advance the efforts of the United Way and the communities they serve though major donorship; and

Whereas, on this evening of celebration, volunteers and staff of United Way of the Columbia-Willamette wish to

express their heartfelt appreciation to their key donors, board and cabinet membership, and supporters; and

Now, therefore, I, Tom Potter, mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the “City of Roses,” do hereby

declare September 17, 2008 as an official

Day of appreciation for the volunteers and supporters of The United Way Columbia-Willamette

and encourage all residents to observe this day.
