Whereas, the United Nations was founded in 1945, and the UN General Assembly adopted a US-sponsored resolution declaring October 24 as United Nations Day; and

 

Whereas, the central role of the United Nations is to promote peace and security, development and human rights around the world, and is vital now more than ever; and

 

Whereas, in September 2000 189 nations, including the United States, agreed upon eight Millennium Development Goals to meet the needs of the worlds’ poorest nations; which are:

 

1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.

 2. Achieve universal primary education.

 3. Promote gender equality and empower women.

 4. Reduce child mortality.

 5. Improve maternal health.

 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases.

 7. Ensure environmental sustainability

 8. Develop a global partnership for development.

Whereas, the citizens of Portland Oregon should participate in all activities related to UN Day; and

 

 

Now, therefore, I, Tom Potter, Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the “City of Roses,” do hereby proclaim October 24, 2008 to be

 

United Nations Day

in Portland, and encourage all citizens to observe this day.
