Whereas, jazz vocalist Nancy King is a long time Portland resident who travels the world representing jazz, Portland, and a positive spirit for all to hear, enjoy, and appreciate; and
Whereas, Nancy King was nominated and recognized for her excellence with a 2006 Grammy Award; and
Whereas, Nancy King has dedicated her life to furthering jazz as America’s classic music, and has with passion, style and grace reached out to countless students and aspiring vocalists in furthering jazz education in and outside of Portland; and
Whereas, Nancy King with special guest Kurt Elling will headline the 2008 Portland Jazz Festival at the Newmark Theater at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, February 22 so that Portland can celebrate that their own Nancy King is the finest jazz vocalist on the contemporary music scene; and
Whereas, the citizens of Portland, Oregon officially recognize that Nancy King is truly a Northwest Cultural Icon;
Now, therefore, I, Tom Potter, Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the “City of Roses,” do hereby declare February 22, 2008 to be an official
Day of Appreciation for
Nancy King
in Portland, and encourage all citizens to observe this day.
