Whereas, Portland honors its employees who devote their lives to working for the safety and betterment of the community; and
Whereas, Dave Sprando joined Portland Fire & Rescue in 1976, the same his year his father retired from the Fire Bureau; and
Whereas, Dave Sprando spent the next 31 years serving our city with honor, integrity and the highest level of dedication to all Portlanders; and
Whereas, Dave Sprando was appointed Fire Chief in 2005, leading an unparalleled group of men and women with warmth, honesty, a sense of humor and humility born from wisdom and strength of character; and
Whereas, as Fire Chief, Dave Sprando helped Portland Fire & Rescue provide more safety equipment to
protect firefighters, reduced call response times and made the bureau more diverse by recruiting more women and minorities to serve Portland; and
Whereas, over his distinguished career, Dave Sprando showed leadership both inside and outside the Fire Bureau in many different roles, including serving as the Fire Bureau’s Division Chief of Emergency Operations and Chief Training Officer, volunteering as a member of the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) Board and Chairperson of Multnomah County’s Defense Board, and enhancing PF&R’s relationship with the Shirlee Ann Foundation; and
Whereas, Dave Sprando is highly respected by the more than 700 firefighters of Portland Fire & Rescue, Portland City Council, his colleagues in City bureaus, regional counterparts, community organizations and all Portlanders; and
Whereas, Dave Sprando will now have time to enjoy spending with his wife, Teri, and his family on Sauvie Island where he grew up.
Now, therefore, I, Tom Potter, Mayor of the City of Portland, Oregon, the “City of Roses,” do hereby declare June 5, 2008 as the official
Day of Appreciation For Dave Sprando
